I am a research scientist at Google Zurich. Prior to that, I was a post-doctoral researcher with Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. I completed my PhD summa cum laude at the Max Planck Institute Informatics under the supervision of Bernt Schiele and Zeynep Akata. My research focuses on vision-language model pretraining and its applications in vision tasks.

Preview abstract
Transformers have become the predominant architecture in foundation models due to their excellent performance across various domains. However, the substantial cost of scaling these models remains a significant concern. This problem arises primarily from their dependence on fixed parameters within linear projections, especially when architectural modifications (e.g., channel dimensions) are introduced. Each scaling iteration typically requires retraining the entire model from the beginning, leading to suboptimal utilization of computational resources. To overcome this limitation, we introduce TokenFormer, a naturally scalable architecture that leverages the attention mechanism exclusively for computations among input tokens and interactions between input tokens and model parameters, thereby enhancing architectural flexibility. By treating model parameters as tokens, we replace all the linear projections in Transformer with our token-parameter attention layer, where input tokens act as queries and model parameters as keys and values. This innovative approach allows for progressive and efficient scaling without necessitating retraining from scratch. Our model scales from 124 million to 1.4 billion parameters by incrementally adding new key-value parameters, achieving performance comparable to models trained from scratch while greatly reducing training costs. Understanding fine-grained temporal dynamics is crucial in egocentric videos, where continuous streams capture frequent, close-up interactions with objects. In this work, we bring to light that current egocentric video question-answering datasets often include questions that can be answered using only few frames or commonsense reasoning, without being necessarily grounded in the actual video. Our analysis shows that state-of-the-art Multi-Modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) on these benchmarks achieve remarkably high performance using just text or a single frame as input. To address these limitations, we introduce EgoTempo, a dataset specifically designed to evaluate temporal understanding in the egocentric domain. EgoTempo emphasizes tasks that require integrating information across the entire video, ensuring that models would need to rely on temporal patterns rather than static cues or pre-existing knowledge. Extensive experiments on EgoTempo show that current MLLMs still fall short in temporal reasoning on egocentric videos, and thus we hope EgoTempo will catalyze new research in the field and inspire models that better capture the complexity of temporal dynamics. In this paper we present a text-conditioned video resampler (TCR) module that uses a pre-trained and frozen visual encoder and large language model (LLM) to process long video sequences for a task. TCR localises relevant visual features from the video given a text condition and provides them to a LLM to generate a text response. Due to its lightweight design and use of cross-attention, TCR can process more than 100 frames at a time with plain attention and without optimised implementations. We make the following contributions: (i) we design a transformer-based sampling architecture that can process long videos conditioned on a task, together with a training method that enables it to bridge pre-trained visual and language models; (ii) we identify tasks that could benefit from longer video perception; and (iii) we empirically validate its efficacy on a wide variety of evaluation tasks including NextQA, EgoSchema, and the EGO4D-LTA challenge.

Image-Text pretraining on a web-scale image caption dataset has become the default recipe for open vocabulary classification and retrieval models thanks to the success of CLIP and its variants. Several works have also used CLIP features for dense prediction tasks and have shown the emergence of open-set abilities. However, the contrastive objective only focuses on image and text alignment and does not incentivise image feature learning for dense prediction tasks. In this work, we propose the simple addition of local-to-global correspondence learning by self-distillation as an additional objective for contrastive pre-training to propose SILC. We show that distilling local image features from an EMA teacher model significantly improves model performance on tasks including classification, retrieval, and especially segmentation. We further show that SILC scales better with the same training duration compared to the baselines. Our improved SILC sets a new state-of-the-art for zero-shot classification, few shot classification, image retrieval, zero-shot segmentation, and open vocabulary segmentation.
